Exceptional establishment by the quality of the welcome, service and food served. Everything is done in the Japanese tradition with tact and discretion.

It was a rather disappointing inn.
Whenever I went to Aso for work, I stayed alone. When I made an online reservation, I could only book a regular Japanese-style room for one person with breakfast for the night, so I had dinner included via telephone and it was over 26,000 yen for one person on weekdays with two meals. It’s this price, it’s a long-established luxury inn… So we paid for the lack of travel expenses, and it was the inn we expected.
But...the room is an ordinary Japanese-style room. The wallpaper has been changed, but the sills and other wooden sections are covered in stains, and the fusuma (sliding doors) are covered in dirt as if something had dripped down. Yukata only comes in one size without making any arrangements for size selection (too big for me). No towel with logo. Is it to hide dirt and scratches on the floor at the wide edge of the window? It is built with only pieces of cheap cushioning material arranged so that you can buy it for 100 yen. The chairs are too old to sit with the back resting because the backrests become odd (the backrests must be set against the wall to be used). The view is a parking lot and tactless private houses (two of which are almost empty and rough). This is not a room at this price.
For cooking, the sakura meat shabu-shabu was unusual, and it makes me want to lean my head to see where it is "full of local bounty." The content and level of the restaurant is full of strange creative Japanese food.
The bath is a shabby open-air bath full of the feeling of being forced to make it laugh. Private baths are super inconvenient without amenities, towels and used towel bins.
A high-grade room such as one with a bath might be worth the price, but a normal Japanese-style room has a much lower cost. The reason why word of mouth is so high here is probably because you stayed in a higher-grade room. It's quite disappointing to have a normal Japanese-style room.

Very well kept and clean onsen ryokan with two private onsens that can be booked, and gender separated large onsens. Food and service was also very good. Well appointed and large rooms with all amenities required including shower and toilet.

Awesome ryokan experience
We loved our stay at Sozankyo. The staff was super friendly and helpful and made us feel right at home.
The japanese style room we had was lovely and very comfortable.
Parking was free and always available.
Breakfast had hood variety, although we felt it looked better than it tasted…
Overall, great stay and we would go back!
