Great location, comfortable and spotlessly clean

Note: there are two Stopover guest houses on Lamu Island - one in Lamu town and the other in Shela. This review is for the one in Shela. Stopover in Shela, is a lovely place to stay for a couple of nights. It's right next to the sea in a really quiet location. The rooms are spotlessly clean, furnished in Swahili style. The one slight negative is the scope of the food menu, especially for breakfast. Essentially it is limited to eggs cooked in different ways and toast. There is also fruit and tea/coffee. The cooking is pretty basic overall and lacks any of the delicious coastal Swahili flavours. I'm sure that if they overhauled the menu they would get more business because the rest of the place is lovely. If you want a hot shower, have one in the evening because in the morning the solar-heated water is cool.
Finally, there are great balconies to sit and watch the sun go down or come up!

Flies, roaches and incompetent service

The design of the place looks wonderful, but the workers and ownership ruined my stay. The manager, Hamid, failed to tell me I couldn't to pay by card until I was ready to check out. I wanted to settle my bill, but somehow this international hotel doesn't have a card reader. The workers told me I had to rush into town to get cash before the ATM closed. They locked my bags in the room when I came back with the money. Hamid was completely rude to me over the phone.
The place also has an infested with flies and I saw the largest roach that I've ever come across in my life. I have a photo of it that hopefully I can upload.
I would honestly say that you should visit the island. Bring your family, wife, significant other. But at all cost, you could do better than stay here.

Overpriced, Overrated B&B in Shela, Lamu

Room was sparsely furninshed, with intermittent hot water.
No wi fi to speak of.
Travel to Lamu by boat or boda is difficult and expensive at dark or high tide.
No Bar, DSTV, no local guides or tours, little or no hospitality, leaving visitors to be ripped off by locals or to just do nothing looking around at nothing.
Even for Africa this place is overpriced, with poor furnishings, and few guest amenities.
Only unexperienced travelers (US, Europe, China) would put up with such a place - will be spending my beach time in Durban in the future, and so should you.
Just another Kenyan tourist trap for the trust fund baby US/European NGO and Volunteer crowd - AVOID.
Honestly Stopover is not bad but the place needs to be improved, furnished, and DSTV for Sport is a must when going to Lamu Town at night simply puts visitors at the mercy of the greedy boatmen and substandard pubs.
I actually went back to Nairobi to wait for my flight to Cape Town, so that is the proof how much this place needs to be improved and the prices need to return to reality, -30% at a minumum to compete with South Africa.
Go to Spain, Asia, South Africa, Turkey, Durban before setting foot here.

Never been happier!

Still smiling after my 10 day stay in Stopover Guesthouse Shela!
The best team I have ever had at a hotel, smiles everyday and really good talks. The food was great, especially the cheese pancakes, mango salad and spicy crab soup! Fresh fish was brought in straight off the boats and the guys even cooked up a lobster given to them by another guest!
Very clean guesthouse, and felt so safe and well looked after.
Trying to come up with a plan to go back and I will be sure to stay with Mattias and the guys again.

Beautiful

Stopover is really reasonably priced and it’s beautiful. Lovely room literally overlooking the channel. I ate dinner here 2ce and it was fabulous - beautiful fish and generous portions. Friendly staff and great location.
