great place to stay
Affordable accomodation with great food, great views, and a nice bar! I cannot stress enough how great this place was. There is a pool and the lodge is right on the lake, all meals are tasty, and the price really cannot be beat.

Right on the Lake
There is quite some maintenance and repair work going on at the Thumbi, nevertheless the overall conditions of the room and the main house are rather poor. It starts with the room door, that is misaligned, with a lock that is hardly to open, continues with the bathroom which is covered with mold and finds its peak with a completely cramped room and old, damaged furniture. No WiFi in my room, the instable WiFi which is available in the lobby though, is limited in data volume and only free on the day of arrival. Afterwards you need to pay for Internet access. I understand that this is not Singapore, but if you cannot provide a stable network, dont advertise it! There are no basics like water bottles or a kettle on your room. All card payments are subject to a 4% transaction fee the hotel charges. And all of that at a price of 90$ upwards for a Standard room. Finally the check out took 60! minutes because they didnt get the sum from the breakfast coffee, internet usage and a single water bottle together. This is not "hang loose" or "relax", hakuna matata, this is gross incompetence. I give it 2 points for the Lake view and the employees who are trying to make the Best out of this situation.

We did go to look,
bathroom covered in mold
is not the most accurate description. It is silicone sealant at the basin that got in touch with sand when installed. That is the color it is Under the silicone, not on top. The shower was installed with terazzo stone that has discolored. This happens due to prolonged exposure to moisture. We did not know this when we installed the floor. Luckily, not all showers were done with terazzo, and obviously lesson learned. However it is not dirty or moldy.
As for the door, perhaps the last people who occupied the room, did not mention there was a problem in a review or bothered to tell us. Unfortunately we do not always know when something needs fixing. I always like to mention on my response how important it is to mention issues while you are here. Us fixing the door now, is not going to make your past stay better.
Regarding the WiFi, this is a village in Malawi. We have no control over nationwide power outages, at which time wifi is down. There is no unlimited wifi in Malawi. So yes, we had cap the free wifi at 1G in order to be able to make sure all guests gets a voucher. We also thought the USD 0.57 USD per Gig is a very reasonable amount to help us keep on offering this service.
I, personally make a point of informing all guests there are not kettles in the room Before arrival, so that people can decide before hand if this is acceptable to them. The fact that you arrive, to us means you are aware, and are fine with it. We have solar in our rooms as a backup. The size of solar system you need to be able to work 24 kettles in 24 rooms is massive. Would you rather have a kettle and sit in the dark when there is no power is how we think about it.
Yes there is a standard 4% fee, as all lodge have in Malawi. Actually, most people charge 5%.
Please look at our rates, we do not have standard double rooms for $90.
Waiting 60 minutes to pay is totally unacceptable and I am shocked to hear about it. We will definitely speak to the staff to find out why management was not called who could have sorted this out quickly.
We’re grateful you acknowledged the lake view and the efforts of our staff. They truly strive to offer warm hospitality, even when circumstances are challenging.

Can’t beat the view
We didn’t stay but visited lots throughout our time in Cape Maclear for drinks and to swim. Gorgeous view, staff are brilliant and prices are reasonable. It’s very clean poolside (pool could maybe do with a scrub). They did stop offering swimming to day visitors whilst we were there!

Absolutely loved my stay here!
If you’re staying in Cape Maclear 100% the place to go to.
All the staff were super friendly and super helpful.
The best sunset view I’ve ever had.
The location is great with good parking.
Comfortable and nice rooms.

Don't nice stay
Did not enjoy the place. The room was dirty. We stayed for four nights (we were in a group so we gad to stay), no cleaning at all. WiFi was provided only for the first day, the next days were for additional payment. WiFi did not work. Food was so, so. After one dinner than, we chose another place. Water was on-off, hot water was only on some days. The staff was friendly, but not so efficient.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. Regarding room cleaning, we provide this service only on request. Previous guests asked us to do it this way as they want to leave valuables in their room without anyone else entering. There is a clear notice in all rooms informing guests of this. You were here for 4 days. I do not understand why you did not mention it to your tour leader, or to me, your group spoke to me several times during your stay.
Malawi is known for its beautiful landscapes and warm-hearted people; however it also comes with unique challenges. Basic things are less consistent here than in other countries, such as internet connectivity and power (electricity) cuts.
We strive to provide the best possible experience despite these challenges. That is why we do our best to ensure first rate comfort and convenience. To that we are the only lodge with the latest satellite internet service.
The internet worked during your stay. We gave the whole group free vouchers 2 days in a row, when we were told it stopped working. One guest then explained to me why his doesn't work and we realized that it was not, not working, people finished the free data supplied. What happens when data is finished, is that the internet stops working.
We sell vouchers at USD$0.057 each. Just to help us cover the cost of running the system. It is not even $1.....
We have nationwide power cuts of more of less 5 hours every day. Because of this we installed solar at great cost. The geyser is not on the solar, but your lights, plugs and fans work perfectly. When there is no power, the geysers cannot heat the water, because there is no power. We inform guests of the schedule as we receive it, it is beyond our control. We do not have fire geysers, they work with electricity and as such cannot heat up water, without power. The group were informed of this.
It is a pity you did not enjoy our food. We make sure to test recipes well before any item goes on the menu and the staff are well trained in executing the dish. We take pride in the quality of our dishes and many guests have shared positive feedback with us about it. Having said that, we understand that taste differs.
We are very proud of our staff and see them as our best asset. It is unfortunate that you feel they are not efficient. In their defense they are not allowed to give away free things, without permission from the owners.
