A Special Place

I only spent three nights at Tuul Riverside Lodge and I already want to go back. It's a very special place and the staff there couldn't be more helpful and welcoming. The Gers are incredibly comfortable and the food exceptional. Despite the seemingly remote location, there's oodles of things to do: horseback riding, canoeing, cooking demos, archery, wildlife viewing, and most important to me, nearly limitless hiking opportunities. And those incredible views... I just enjoyed taking an afternoon off and reading a book while watching the cloud shadows move over the sprawling landscape. A truly special place.

Mongolia at its best

We celebrated my 75th birthday with a group of friends at the Tuul River Lodge. The setting and facilities are perfect for such an occasion, and the staff went over the top in delivering a great party event, exceptional food, including Gluten Free for some of our guests and of course that magnificent Mongolian friendliness.

Local Ulaanbaatar Countryside Retreat

We stayed at Tuul Riverside Lodge with some friends. Making the reservation went very smoothly as did the pick-up and transport to the camp, only an hour outside of Ulaanbaatar.
We were given a complimentary upgrade to a deluxe Kazakh family ger on arrival. All of our hosts were very friendly and highly attentive to our needs enabling archery and horse riding. It was reassuring to see the lodge manager, Telmuun, accompany my daughter and our friend on their horse riding session. This was just one example of the reassuring personal touch that TRL is renowned for.
The food at the camp is astounding and suits all tastes including those with specific dietary requirements. We were all impressed with the quality, quantity and diversity available at the mealtime buffets.
The Kazakh family ger that we stayed in was comfortable though a few improvements would have made it more so. It would have been much better if there had been comfortable seating, adequately sized bedding and a mosquito net that was large enough for the bed.
On the whole, we enjoyed our stay here and felt that with the 40% discount it was good value for money. We would most certainly stay again.

Stunning location and outstanding service

We (dad and two preteens) spent a few nights with Tuul Riverside Lodge, both at the lodge and at a private glamping experience organized by them in a more remote area. Having stayed at high end glamping properties in other parts of the world (South Africa, Kenya, etc), we are accustomed to a very high level of service and Tuul was right there with the best of them. Our interactions with Suzan by email were consistently excellent, and she was very good at adapting our schedule to our late arrival due to bad weather and flight cancellations.
Tuul Riverside Lodge is in a stunning location that is fairly close to Ulaanbatar and yet feels quite remote due to the lack of other habitation within viewing distance. It is adjacent to a river, which is great for boat rides (which we took) and swimming / bathing. The Lodge is surrounded by rolling hills and the view is spectacular in all directions. Tuul also arranged a private glamping trip for us in Khustai Nuruu national park, which was even more amazing, surrounded as it was by water on all sides.
The service standards are wonderful throughout the Lodge and in their private camping sites. The staff seem genuinely interested in guests having a good experience and, in some ways, it feels like staying with family rather than with a commercial hospitality organization. Of course, the family type service cuts both ways and we sometimes had to remind a few people for things that they forgot. We would particularly like to appreciate the service of the chef at the Lodge, who did a brilliant job accommodating our vegetarian diets, and Egi at the private camp, who is perhaps the nicest camp host we have come across in our extensive travels.
The hard product - the tents and gers - are very interesting. The gers at the Lodge are an authentic but upgraded version of the ones we saw nomads using. Ours had proper floors, an attached full bathroom, etc. One of the reasons we chose Tuul was because they seem to be the only ones offering a ger with an en suite bathroom in the Ulaanbatar area, and we were glad we had that convenience. One downside of the ger is that it is not very suitable for people with allergies as the entire thing is felt and fabric, but then we wanted an authentic Mongolian experience. The private camp was altogether spectacular with a beautiful lotus-shaped tent, a separate dining tent just for us, and a fully functional bathroom tent that even had a rainshower!
In terms of activities, the lodge kept the kids super-busy with archery, hiking, ox cart riding, nomad visits and playing with the nomad kids, horse riding, going in the air boat, seeing wildlife in the national park, etc. Our only disappointment was that we wanted to go on more horse-back rides but we did not give the lodge sufficient notice and they were not able to arrange the ride the second time. Next time, we will plan our itinerary better as we understand the lodge does not always have the nomad / horse herder available.
Overall, Mongolia is a stunningly beautiful country with friendly people, and Tuul does a great job of providing sincere, family-style service in a well-located ger camp that has en suite bathrooms. Their private camping experience is even better and highly recommended.

Something seriously wrong with the management of this gercamp

The location and quality of this ger camp is not bad compared to other ger camps in Mongolia, but it nevertheless does not deserve the accolades other reviewers bestow upon it. It is not remote, it is not in a pristine location (fences, electricity poles, buildings in full sight everywhere,...). But that is just what it is. More disturbing, and deeply so, is that the management and owners of this camp have a remarkable approach and view about their camp, about who should visit and how much they should pay. Probably exactly because of the fact that the camp is not as pristine as some (Mongolia ignorant) foreign reviewers proclaim it to be, Susana, the owner and/or manager, vocally opposes and prevents Mongolian people to visit or even drop off or deliver customers. She clearly does not want this place to be contaminated with locals and local input. Before we had understood that the camp's strategy was to protect it from local contamination, three or four times in the last two years we had sent groups of visitors to stay in the camp. We hadn't really realised it, but each time we had been asked to pay a day visiting fee and had to pay for a nice but nevertheless simple and meagre lunch, despite the fact that we delivered seriously paying customers. The last time this happened was in the weekend of 18-19 May 2019. Susana was there but did not bother to come and greet us. The reason why they don't want locals is obviously to try and prevent negative publicity from becoming public, but another reason is that they make a lot of effort to try and prevent cars from driving to the camp. That is because they have a fleet of five or so heavy duty high wheel trucks which they try and rent out to visitors for USD 175 per trip. These trucks cause tremendous damage to the off-road paths to and from the road from Ulaanbaatar to Nalaikh.
I feel sorry writing this negative review about a camp which is apparently so popular on tripadvisor with ignorami and with those who do not want to present their trip to Mongolia as less than tremendous. But it is necessary to provide an accurate and honest opinion about camps and foreigners who are not serious about building an honest and sustainable business in a country which is so much in need of honesty and sustainability.

One remarkable feature of this magnificent country is its vast, open spaces, accessible as soon as one leaves Ulaanbaatar behind. Our guests – all well-travelled and many of them repeating visitors – enjoy being surrounded by the beautiful landscape and the peacefulness of the lodge, while enjoying the convenience of its close vicinity to the capital.
Although the drive from the city to the lodge is only around one hour, the last 8-10 kilometers are very challenging: dirt roads and several river crossings make it inaccessible to ordinary vehicles (there are plenty of descriptions of this online). That is why we offer transportation (upon request), ranging from 15$ to 120$ per person, depending on the route and group-size. To prevent damages to the sensitive grasslands, we furthermore now transport most of our guests by airboat via the Tuul River. As it has no underwater propeller, the boat does not irritate water-life nor does it contaminate the river.
Myself Eurasian originally, I learned from early childhood how beneficial and beautiful it can be when East meets West peacefully and with goodwill. This is reflected in the design our camp, as can be seen in how we combine elements of nomadism and settled nations: on one hand, our guests can enjoy Mongolia’s stunning felt-dwellings and on the other, they can enjoy simple comforts such as en-suite bathrooms with hot and cold running water (which require electricity). Our visitors – Mongolians and foreign tourists alike - seem to appreciate our efforts to offer this service.
My husband and I have lived in Mongolia since 1994 and have raised our four children here. We do not regard ourselves as “foreigners” but as citizens of this country. Our core team of twenty office staff, drivers, and other tourism professionals has been with us for two decades and have helped us shape our business to be true to Mongolia. We take the challenges plaguing Mongolia, including desertification and overgrazing, very seriously. To this effect, over the last decade, we have planted hundreds of trees and bushes, in the city and in the countryside alike. I hate walls myself, however, in order to protect the plant life from the free-roaming livestock, we built a fence, interrupted by a number of gates, which are open to all well-wishers.
The accusation that we do not want Mongolian visitors in our camp is blatantly untrue. It is true that most of our visitors are foreign tourists. This is because the domestic tourism market is small. Most Mongolians are well-connected to the countryside, often by family, and therefore rarely utilize our services. Besides this, I find it hard to understand how a local people could “contaminate” our camp by visiting their own countryside. Our clients come from all around the world and we respect and value every single one of them, no matter their nationality, race, religious beliefs or sexual orientation.
I am very sorry that I missed you when you visited last time. I didn’t mean to ignore you – I checked the dates and we had a staff project down at the Tuul River that day, which kept us all very busy. Furthermore, I didn’t receive the booking form; I could not know that you were there as a repeating visitor. We do charge for food, but this is common in restaurants. We communicate our prices and are transparent about this.
I spoke to most of the other members of your group; all of them expressed their happiness – this shall be – despite of this dispute – of comfort to both of us. We highly appreciate the positive feedback of our guests, which motivates us to continue giving our best.
Sincerely,
Suzan
