Clean, comfortable and ideal location.
This was the second time my wife and I stayed at Hotel Larende while in Amsterdam. The fact that we booked here again after our first experience should be a good indication that we were very satisfied the first time. The hotel is well-run, very clean and comfortable. We stayed in Room 304 which had a small balcony overlooking a lovely courtyard. The room was an adequate size with a comfortable king size bed and a very decently sized bathroom. The breakfast was nothing special, with pretty much the same spread of fried or scrambled eggs, cut-up fruit, croissants, a variety of sliced lunch meats, juice and coffee or tea, but it was sufficient for us to start the day. The room rate was very reasonable and the location was ideal with a short, 10 minute walk to Tram #17 to get you to Amsterdam Centraal or even a shorter walk to another tram stop for other tram lines. The neighborhood is lovely, safe-feeling and we even used a laundry across the street to have some clothes laundered and they delivered them to our room the same day. When we find ourselves in Amsterdam, we’ll be staying at Hotel Larende for a third time!

Rude, disrespectful and homophobic
I rarely leave negative reviews, unfortunately this stay was a very disappointing experience, especially considering the hotel charges almost €300 per night.
When I arrived at around 2:30 p.m., after the published check-in time, there was nobody at reception. I waited for approximately 20 minutes before a member of staff eventually came downstairs. While he apologised for the delay, the check-in that followed was cold, abrupt and completely lacking in even the most basic hospitality. There was no welcome, no explanation of the hotel facilities, no information about the Wi-Fi, and none of the standard courtesies you would reasonably expect from a hotel in this price range.
Instead, I was immediately told that my booking was for one person, that additional overnight guests would incur an extra charge, and then, without any prompting, I was informed that visitors were not allowed in my room for more than 10 minutes.
I found this extremely unusual, so I politely asked where this policy was stated, as I had never seen it during the booking process. The receptionist’s response was, “It’s just my rule.” When I asked him to show me where this rule was written, he replied, “I don’t want to show you. It’s just my rule.”
That response was completely unacceptable. Hotels cannot simply invent rules on the spot, particularly when they were never disclosed before booking. To make matters worse, I have attached a photograph of the house rules provided in my room, and there is absolutely no mention anywhere of a 10-minute visitor restriction. Readers can judge for themselves.
This interaction immediately set a negative tone for my entire stay. Every time I entered or left the hotel, the same receptionist was consistently cold, unfriendly and discourteous. There was never so much as a greeting or acknowledgement, and I felt genuinely unwelcome throughout my stay.
As a gay guest visiting Amsterdam during Pride weekend, I was also left wondering whether I was treated differently because of who I am. I cannot know his motivation, and I cannot state that this was the case, but the unsolicited emphasis on visitors, combined with the hostile attitude throughout my stay, left me feeling deeply uncomfortable and unwelcome.
There are plenty of hotels in Amsterdam that understand what hospitality means. Unfortunately, this was not one of them. For the price charged, I expected professionalism, transparency and basic courtesy. Instead, I left feeling disrespected and with the impression that arbitrary “personal rules” mattered more than treating guests with respect.
I would not stay here again, nor would I recommend it to others.

This is also required by our insurance policies. You are, of course, welcome to bring guests into your room, provided they are registered. WE ARE NOT HOMOPHOBIC – please do not lie.’

Service all around was excellent from check in to check out. Was able to store bags for a few hours while exploring Amsterdam. Easy walk to the 19 tram which takes you to the Sloterdjik station that takes you to Schipol airport. Although my room had a an outdoor deck, the room is extremely small. You’re not meant to spend much in that room but sleep and shower. The bathroom is ridiculously small too. Also note the drinks in the mini frig are not free! My mistake…haha
