Modest, friendly small hotel

The Alexandra is a modest, owner-run hotel in Ballater, and I think it is best judged in that context rather than compared with a polished chain hotel. The small team were friendly and efficient, and it was clear that they were working hard and doing a lot themselves.
My room was small and rather dated in decor, but it was clean and functional. The shower had a decent flow, which is always a plus in an older hotel. There is also a small but pleasant beer garden.
Breakfast was good. I had scrambled egg on toast with smoked salmon, and service was quick. There was a reasonable selection of cereals, though the fruit and yoghurt side was fairly basic, with tubs of diced fruit rather than compote or Greek yoghurt.
There were a few limitations. There was no fan, no iron or ironing board, the bathroom toiletries were very basic, and the Wi-Fi speed varied considerably. Parking was on the surrounding streets rather than in a dedicated hotel car park. There was also some early road noise from passing traffic and tractors.
Overall, I would describe the Alexandra as practical, friendly accommodation with restaurant and bar. It did the basics reasonably well, and I appreciate the realities of running a small owner-managed hotel in a short Highland tourist season. That said, once the tariff is over £125 a night, the very slow Wi-Fi, small room and limited facilities do affect the sense of value. For a short stay in Ballater it was acceptable, but personally I would probably look at other options next time.

Average hotel with a good restaurant.

Light and a little shade in Ballater. Positively, the good cuisine, delicious beers, and a good selection of whiskey. Additionally, the charming hosts. Everything is very harmonious. However, the rooms exude the charm of the 70s and are definitely not up to date. The bathroom is also very small. There is room for improvement. Therefore, it is actually more like 3 and a half points, but rounded up to 4 with eyes closed, because the location right in the middle of Ballater is very good.

Fantastic!

We had a wonderful stay at the Alexandra Hotel in Ballater and couldn’t have felt more welcome from the moment we arrived. Fiona was absolutely lovely—so warm and friendly, she really set the tone for our visit and made us feel right at home.
Fergie was also incredibly helpful throughout our stay, always happy to assist with anything we needed and full of great local knowledge.
One of the highlights for us was the evening chats—thank you both for taking the time to sit and talk with us. It made the experience feel so personal and memorable, like staying with friends rather than just at a hotel.
The full Scottish breakfast was absolutely delicious and a perfect way to start each day—fresh, hearty, and clearly made with care. Our bedroom was also very comfortable, making it easy to relax and unwind after a day out exploring.
We truly appreciated the hospitality and would happily return again. Thank you for making our stay so special!

Best place to eat on Ballater.

Lovely food, nice staff and not too expensive. We ate there three times this week as we did last year when we are at Craigendarroch and to be honest the food is better here than it is at the Craigendarroch. If beef and lentil soup is on offer then go for it.

Evening Meal

Popped in for an evening meal. We ate in the bar area and it was lovely and cozy. Very welcoming people.
We had really nice food. Steak Pie was delicious.
