Such a warm and friendly welcome on a cold May evening
John and I and our westie, Kenzy, received a great welcome after our long journey from South-west Scotland. A glass of our favourite, Harris, gin made a good start to the evening. We both had fish, I had the pan-fried Hake. It was delicious and beautifully cooked and John really enjoyed his battered haddock. There was a reasonable choice of wine to go with the food and the portion sizes were just right for us but no room for the interesting puddings. Cromarty is a lovely warm and friendly place and the Royal Hotel seems to play a major role in keeping it that way. It is a great holiday destination for people who love nature and the world around us.

A dreadful experience - I wish I’d seen the previous reviews!
Our on-night stay at the Royal Hotel in Cromarty failed to deliver on its superior description of the room offered. The room rate was £205/night, so we expected high standards in all aspects of our stay.
The standard of cleanliness and quality of the room left a lot to be desired; grimy and inappropriate shower/bath, low quality mattress, stained and unhoovered carpet, was shockingly poor. The breakfast was inadequate - the bread described as from a local Cromarty Bakery was obviously a cheap white-sliced loaf!
The overpriced evening meal was tasty - a positive, with friendly and helpful staff.
A reflection that a hotels with a Faulty Towers twist still prevail!

Horrendous. Would not recommend
As regular visitors to Cromarty, we brought friends over for the day and decided to try The Royal Hotel for the first time. Unfortunately, it will also be our last.
From the moment we walked through the door, we were made to feel like an inconvenience rather than paying customers. Our party consisted of six adults and two children, and before we had even properly entered, we were abruptly told to move forward and get through the doorway. We politely asked whether a table was available. Despite the restaurant being far from full and a suitable table clearly visible, we were immediately met with hostility.
After a waitress pushed tables together for us, a blonde member of staff questioned why we hadn’t booked. We explained that our plans for the day had been flexible, to which she snapped, “And I’m supposed to just know when you’re coming?” The sarcasm and attitude were completely unnecessary. What followed were several more snide, dismissive remarks that left all eight of us feeling thoroughly unwelcome.
I’ve since noticed a number of reviews mentioning the same individual’s lack of manners, and based on our experience, I can absolutely see why. It is astonishing that someone working in hospitality can display such a complete lack of basic courtesy, professionalism, and customer service.
The atmosphere became so uncomfortable that we decided to leave before even sitting down. When we explained why, we were treated to a passive-aggressive performance of exaggerated smiles and repeated “Have a great day” comments that only reinforced how insincere and rude the interaction had been.
All eight of us were genuinely shocked by the experience. We weren’t asking for special treatment—just the basic politeness that any customer should reasonably expect. Instead, we were made to feel like a nuisance for simply walking through the door.
The Royal Hotel has ensured that not only will we never return, but we certainly won’t be recommending it to anyone else. A real shame, given how often we visit Cromarty.
If you’re looking for somewhere that actually values its customers, do yourself a favour and visit Sutor Creek instead. Friendly, welcoming, and a perfect example of how hospitality should be done.

Lovely Cromarty
What a spectacular view from this hotel it’s right by the sea and is a perfect place to stay when visiting Cromarty .
I had a beautiful room looking out over the bay which you could look at all day. By night it’s still beautiful and is so calming to watch.
Staff were friendly and gave great service.

Proprietress needs to go on a Customer Services Refresher Course
Rocked up at 5pm on Sunday 26th April. planning to have an evening meal ( after checking the Food & Drink section of their website - see screenshot attached ) ... the proprietress almost fell over herself to throw us out ... "WE"RE SHUT" she almost yelled .... "CAN'T YOU SEE ONE OF THE DOORS ARE SHUT" . She needs to go on a customer services refresher course. Fortunately for us we found an excellent Fish & Chip shop in Fortrose. I also noticed that they are still advertising Covid restrictions on their website ... 6 years after the event !!
