Comfortable, Clean, and Ideally Located
We stayed at Hostal Esparteros in Madrid in late July and August 2025, and we really loved it. The place felt newly renovated, very clean, and well maintained.
The room was excellent. It had a small pantry area with a counter, sink, and refrigerator, which was very convenient. There were two beds, one large bed for us and a smaller one for my daughter. The bathroom was small but beautifully finished, with high-quality details.
The location is fantastic, very close to Plaza Mayor and within walking distance of many of the main attractions in Madrid. It made it very easy to get around and explore the city.
The only small challenge was entering the building, which can be a bit tricky at times, but that’s quite common in Europe and not a major issue.
This is not a place with amenities or activities, it’s really meant for resting and sleeping, but for that purpose, it’s perfect. It’s quiet, comfortable, and ideal after a day of exploring.
The air conditioning worked wonderfully, which was very important for us during the summer. Everything was very clean, and despite being in a central area, noise from the street was not a problem.
Service was also good. Our only interaction was with reception, and they were attentive and helpful.
Overall, we had a great experience. For the price, the value is excellent, and I would definitely recommend it for a short stay in Madrid.

The staff was okay, but the place was upstairs behind locked doors. My room was TINY: 7'6" across, and about 10' long. The bathroom had almost NO level spaces to put toiletries - only a small shelf above the sink. I ended up putting bathroom stuff on the very small (30" wide) desk.
I disliked this place so much that I checked out the next morning for a better hotel. I ate most of the prepaid reservation, but it was worth it.

Excellent value for money and top location
Very nice hotel in the center.
Position: top. You are really within walking distance of everything (Plaza del sol, Plaza major, great street)
Rooms: very small, but functional and clean. Bathroom with shower, hairdryer, TV, mini bar. We had a room with outside balcony.
Wi-Fi: fully functional.
Staff: very kind. Possibility to leave luggage on the last day and check out at 12:00.

Antipathics
We were well served when we arrived but at the exit were quite rude, the lady was not friendly and with an authoritarian tone of voice, we had the check out at 12h and we were a little late from there they were immediately locked, tiny bathrooms and smelled like sewage, broken cabinets, mini sea without water, and opened the door with my naked boyfriend

It's good but............
As this is the only place we've actually stayed in Madrid we don't have a compatible but from our research this is a great place to stay, spoiled only by not having the right expectations! So this is to help!
The location is great (just round the corner from Plazor Mayor).
The room is clean and tidy with good beds, pillows, etc.
However, unless you've experienced a micro bathroom, you're going to have a shock when you find your knees touch the wall when you're sat on the toilet.
The shower is a bit of problem, first of all getting the temperature right but then dodging the water when it suddenly goes cold or really hot. We suspect it's when others use the water.
The patio doors look great but in our room (417) were badly fitted. They didn't shut right which meant we could hear every sound from the street below as if we'd left the window open.
Wardrobe cannot be described as functional, adequate or for that matter a wardrobe. It's a rail with five hangers and there's only one draw (a desk draw) with some open cabinets either side the bed. Clothes storage is therefore a bit interesting.
The kettle is functional but impossible to fill in the sink (you'll need to use a cup) and the coffee cups are what might be described as "one mouthful size".
All in all, these thing did obviously affect our enjoyment but I think we'd have still booked even knowing these things.... but we'd have enjoyed more with different expectations!
