Good choice in Stockholm, but…
Its main asset: the hotel is located in the city center, allowing access on foot to most of Stockholm's activities. The hotel and the rooms are very clean, the staff is welcoming, and the breakfast buffet is varied and plentiful. Moreover, there are still some Art Deco elements, notably the staircase and the old elevator, which have a lot of charm, even though the latter broke down during our stay.
Nevertheless, with the high turnover of guests, it is necessary to book a long time in advance, at the risk of getting only a small room (yet "luxurious") with a view of walls and the noise of air conditioners, which was our case. On the other hand, the price is high compared to the services offered.

Amazing story. My father brought me to Stockholm in 1983 and we stayed at the Hotel Diplomat. Now my husband brought me to Stockholm and picked the Hotel Diplomat too. He did not know I had stayed there. More amazing is we discovered after we checked in that we ended up in THE SAME ROOM.

The location of the hotel is amazing, overlooking the river. Easy to walk into the city centre and other parts. Tram and buses near by.
All the staff were amazing, and could not do enough for you.
At breakfast Emma always looked after me, she was helpful and made time to chat. A pleasure meeting her.
Mario was great, he helped will me with recommendations and places to see. It felt like family. My next to Stockholm I will be staying here.

Great location, average hotel
We initially booked the Diplomat for a week but checked out after two nights and went to a more expensive hotel across the water for our remaining five nights.
Thinking about the positives, the location is excellent, within easy walking distance of pretty much all the attractions Stockholm offers. The hotel is also a very attractive building with many period features and clearly has a rich history.
Dinner in the restaurant was delicious and the breakfast is also quite good, but I’d say it’s more 3-4 star standard rather than 5 star.
There are numerous issues however…
We arrived at around 7pm on a Friday evening with our two young children but there doesn’t seem to be a porter service (there wasn’t when we checked out either). The tiny lift, being an original feature of the building meant that getting bags up to our room was a pain and while the receptionist kindly offered to help, this seems to be an oversight by the management.
The room was generally ok but was in need of some urgent TLC. The paint was damaged in a number of places and it was annoying having to unplug the phone to be able to use a charger. The bedding had a peculiarly unpleasant smell, a bit like a wet dog, which we found off putting.
The bathroom was incredibly spartan and the shower was also prone to flooding. To compound matters, we weren’t left enough bath towels for each of us to have our own, which is a basic error. The bathrooms need to be more plush, having seemingly not been renovated for a few years. This is something of a theme in the hotel with the common areas looking rather dated and poorly maintained as opposed to original.
The biggest issue for us was the level of noise from the street. We had a courtyard room and were kept awake by loud motorbikes and cars until around 2am both nights. The noise seems to echo off the courtyard walls and seems to be a common issue at weekends for many centrally located hotels in Stockholm.
I would say there is a general lack of attention to detail in this hotel. I’ve enjoyed stays in many older hotels around Europe where they get the balance right between modern luxury and showcasing heritage but this hotel needs some attention.

Love this hotel! Perfect location in Stockholm! Feels like coming home and the staff is so great! Murtaza at the front desk always remembers your name and makes sure you are well taken care of and that you have everything you need! Can’t wait to be back in about a week!
