Invercargill has the Southland Museum and Art Gallery where you can see live Tuatara's, one of the worlds strangest and rarest reptiles. The surrounding Botanical gardens are lovely. Nearby pie shop has the best seafood pies in Southland. Local fish shop out on the road to Bluff sells whitebait, bluff oysters and fresh NZ cod.
Lived in Invercargill in late 80's and part time in early 90's. It is a small town based around the local farming community. A multiplex cinema had just been built, it has a number of good high schools and a couple of interesting eating spots. The best thing is that it is a good starting spot to visit a number of great regions of NZ - skiing in Queenstown, hiking in Fiordland, fruit picking in Otago.
This little town has the coolest, most hilarious mayor on the planet. Through his discretionary fund, Mayor Tim Shadbolt rescued pigs from Auckland Island. These pigs cost more than expected, however, they are now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars because their blood cells could help cure Type 1 Diabetes. (No kidding. Google "Auckland pigs, Diabetes trials" for more info). Invercargill also is breeding the endangered Tuatara (which resembles an iguana) at its Museum. (See separate review).
