Long Tan Park, Liuzhou. On a warm Saturday afternoon we walked a few yards away from the car park we picked out way through families relaxing on the lawns in amongst trees and spotted a large group in uniform. With just a quick nod in there directing and a quickly stumbled over ‘Ni Hao’ I was swarmed over by around 40 excited schools girls “hello, hello how are you what is your name”. Firstly I’m not used to this reaction, and I’ve very rarely asked take pictures of groups of school girls. Er or not asked and taken pictures of school girls…. anyway there were a lot of them in army uniforms and I thought they were boys! It was quite over whelming at first buy they were shy when questioned and after a brief chat with my traveling buddies we were asked to be in group photograph documented by one of our many journo blogging photographers plus there own the school photographer. The girls all around 18 years old were then marched around for about 5mins and then sat down of the grass to enjoy the week milky sunshine you seem to get in this part of China and that is where we left them. After some boating in the park, we took to the restaurant for another minority marriage some fantastic food, more drinking instigated by the Zhuang women (yes there are Zhuang man and they can dance well, and I haven’t had to marry one of them yet) I was offered a small green leaf to put in my mouth and hum with into a micro phone, at this point I had lost all of my British reserve after drinking six cups of rice wine while one of the colourfully dressed ladies held my ear and I hummed my top lip into numbness group dining in china the toast is inevitable, we then meet met many local dignitaries from the travel bureau, and the attractions on the way and they toasted our visit and welcomed us to their town with more rice wine. At this point it’s apt to point out one of the major and louder characters of this trip Mr Liu or Mr CCTV, or Fog horn leg horn. Not a very large man but a little round of girth, this character toasted every table at least twice per meal (not breakfast thankfully). We became his brother “Xiong De”, and on one occasion he toasted us with three rice bowels of rice wine after changing our small tea cups for rice bowels. He had his comeuppance the next day when made to drink an enormous serving bowl of rice wine filled right to the brim by our host, as he had done to us. His machine gun voice was used to great effect and he serenaded us on many occasions with song about what I’m not really sure, and I once rode him like a horse, after one of my many marriages at a minority village see picture below. Our Chinese traveling companions explained that this man is a typical Chinese man loud and proud. “Ganbei” is the toast which means if you accept that you are to down the lot, and we did this. However we later learnt to politely refuse his invites, with Bu Yao xie xie ni, which he excepted. His loud, happy humorous tones filled the trip with an authentic flavor that I thank him for, the trip would not have been the same without him, and I’m sure that I would not have had the chance to spend so much time and learn so much about Chinese culture if I had not completed this trip. Ganbei, Xiong De! Mr Liu. Some of the destinations we visited were not in any way authentic as this was a trip with the Chinese package tourist in mind. So be sure to get as much information as possible before heading to Minority village for a show。
